Handmade Chawan Matcha Bowl - Navy

Handmade Chawan Matcha Bowl - Navy

$109.00 USD

A handmade matcha bowl, designed for a better whisking experience.

Each bowl is hand-thrown and individually glazed in small batches by Japanese ceramicist Thomas Arakawa. No two are exactly alike.

We've whisked matcha in dozens of bowls. This one changed the standard for us. Smoother matcha, and thick, velvety foam in seconds.

Finished in a navy blue Oribe glaze, rooted in more than 400 years of Japanese tea tradition.

A functional piece of tea tradition, made for everyday use.

Because each bowl is made by hand, subtle variations in shape, glaze, and color are part of the character of each piece.

Arakawa Pottery

Arakawa Pottery is the studio of Thomas Arakawa and Kathy Lee, nestled in the hills of San Jose, California.

Every bowl is a collaboration: Thomas throws each one on the wheel, and Kathy handbuilds the spout and attaches it by hand.

Designed for Better Microfoam

This bowl is specially designed to help achieve microfoam, the layer of tiny bubbles that crowns a properly whisked matcha and gives it its creamy, smooth taste. A compact diameter with straight walls helps your whisk build a rich, even foam. The spout is shaped for a clean, controlled pour, so nothing drips down the side.
